The start of a new month means the start of a new thematic unit in our classroom. In October, we're learning all about Fall!
The unit started with an exploration of fall nature items -- acorns, pinecones, twigs and leaves.
During circle time, we learned this easy "Seasons" song. We looked at each poster and talked about each season. Our Pre-K class was able to make the connection that the 4 Seasons "go in a circle" like the Apple Life Cycle we learned about last month. Hooray!
We also sang "Autumn Leaves," a simple song that gets the kids up and moving.
After we learned the song, we added buckets of silk leaves and 2 plastic rakes. The students acted out the song and practiced raking up the leaves. As an added bonus, when it was time to clean up, we sorted the leaves by color into their matching buckets.
The rakes were very popular. (Take note, parents, and get ready to send those kiddos outside to do some yard work!) When we have a limited item during centers, we use a waiting list to keep track of who gets to go next. In this case, each time the song finished, the students passed the rakes onto the next friends on the list. Practicing patience and learning to take turns are important life lessons!
