Letter Rubbings

One of our top priorities in preschool, academically, is to help the students identify all of their letters.  Last week, we set up a fun, exciting and easy literacy center-- Letter Rubbings!

Many years ago (before 4 kids) I had a scrapbooking closet with drawers full of papers and stickers.  Fast forward to today when I do all of my photobooks online and had to redesign the closet to accommodate 2 girls' clothes, and my scrapbooking stickers are gathering dust.  It turns out I had lots of different sizes and fonts-- perfect for preschoolers.

To make this center, I put the stickers on our yellow circle table.

Then we taped printer paper over the stickers and provided a basket of unwrapped crayons.  After spending so much time working with the students on correct pencil grip, it was a little tricky to teach them to rub.  Once they got the hang of it, they loved this center!

The rubbings turned out so well, and it was great to hear the students get excited when they "found" a new letter under their paper.  It was like a letter scavenger hunt!

I'd love to hear other teachers' ideas for incorporating letter knowledge at the beginning of the preschool year.  Have fun playing and learning with your child today.

  1. I make the letters (or numbers) on the table with masking tape. I put out different manipulatives, unifix cubes, wiki sticks, beads, etc. The children then use those to "build" the letter. I also make them in duct tape on the floor and give the kids toy cars, and they use their gross motor skills to drive the cars over the letter shapes.
