Sound Box

Each week during one of our Pre-K circle time lessons, I introduce a "Sound Box."  The students get so excited when I pull out the Sound Box!  It is full of objects (small toys, foods from our play kitchen, art supplies, etc.) that all begin with the same letter.  I pull the objects out one at a time and the kiddos have to guess which inflatable letter is also inside!

This week, we had an H sound box.  There was a hat, a heart, a horse, a hamburger, and a hot dog.  After just one or two objects, the students were shouting out, "It's H!!!"  I took out the yellow letter and inflated it to see if they were correct.

Here are a few other examples of sound box collections.  Here's F:

And A.  (I always teach the short vowel sound-- asparagus, alligator, apple, alphabet.  Adding an acorn would be too confusing for my Pre-K kiddos.)

The B Box: bear, box, baseball, bumblebee, battery, butterfly and baby.

After the students guess the letter, we practice making the sound and hang the letter on our alphabet wall.  It is so motivating for the students to keep track of all the letters we have learned.

During centers, the students complete the corresponding page in their ABC Books.  Each student has one to use throughout the school year.  They are copied with a card stock cover and spiral bound.

The pages have a spot for the students to trace the letters, and then they make a small picture or craft to remind them of the letter sound.

We made handprints for H and apple prints for the letter A.

They colored a picture of a tie for the letter T, and glued silk leaves onto the letter L page.

The Sound Box is a great way to introduce the letters and their sounds without having to adopt a "Letter of the Week" curriculum.

Enjoy playing and learning with your child today.
