Wildlife Ambassadors

Going on a field trip with preschoolers can sometimes be tricky. When a field trip isn't an option, bringing visitors into the classroom is the next best thing. We were so fortunate to have Becky from Wildlife Ambassadors come to share her "Amazing Animals" program with our students. It was the perfect addition to our Zoo unit.

The first animal that we learned about was Mowgli, the African Gray Parrot. Mowgli was a hoot-- meowing and clucking and making all sorts of funny noises! We learned that his home is the rainforest canopy, and that he likes to eat fruits and nuts.

Milo, the blue-tongued skink was the next animal in the program. Like all reptiles, he has dry scaly skin.

We got to touch his back to feel it!

This adorable bunny, Thumper, was the crowd favorite! Miss Becky held him like a baby the whole time, and we got to pet him too.

We also learned about this "creepy crawly" - Charlotte the tarantula. She is a fragile creature, so we could look but not pet her. (Insert a sigh of relief from the teachers!)

Finally, we learned about a creature that we find right in our own backyards in Virginia -- Olie the box turtle. Did you know that you can tell the sex of a box turtle by the color of its eyes? See his orange eyes? Olie is a male. Female box turtles have brown eyes. Who knew?!

If you're local, I highly recommend this program. Becky was phenomenal -- friendly, personable and the program was just right for our preschoolers.
