Something recently caught my eye at the craft store. (It was AC Moore, but I imagine that you could find them anywhere.) They had a display of transparent picnic products -- plates, pitchers, bowls, utensils, etc. I am always drawn to cheap transparent "toys" because I know that they look great on the light table. Then, I saw these... shot glasses and "tube shots." I don't even know what a tube shot is, but I knew that they would provide an awesome building tool for the light table!
At first, the students explored by turning them upside down and piling them on top of each other. Look at the stack on the left. It's a blue cup with a pink cup on top. It appears to be a beautiful purple color.
Then we tried to stack them higher by alternating them right side up and upside down. This takes a lot of hand-eye coordination and muscle control. The kids have to be a bit gentle with the cups because the plastic is thin and they are fragile. It's good for preschoolers to practice being gentle!
The next day, we added ping pong balls to the mix. The are about the same size as the cups. The students started by filling each cup with a ball.
Then they decided to add them to the top of the towers. Don't those look cool!?
Finally, we added the shot tubes. They are the same colors as the cups, but the shape provides a really nice contrast to the cups. One of our students covered the whole table in cups, put the tubes all around, and then added a ping pong ball to the top of each one.
Light table art!
If you have a preschool in your basement and a neighborhood full of kids, then this is what happens to the light table after school when they all get home and want to come over to "play school."
They built a huge wall of cups along the edge of the light table. Even though there are only 4 colors of cups: pink, orange, light green and blue, when you look down on it you can see all the shades of color made by overlapping the cups. It was gorgeous!
Have fun playing and learning with your children today!

We love this light table. It was our main purchase last summer and we use it every day. Here's an affiliate link:
