We hit the jackpot at the dollar store. They have a package of 4 plastic tongs (in the party aisle) for just $1. Tongs are a terrific way to practice the pincer grasp and to strengthen our students' hand muscles. They also had bags of gold coins - 30 for $1.
The sensory table is filled with dry split green peas and lentils. The gold coins are sprinkled through the peas and we added the tongs and little plastic pots.
The students can practice pouring, scooping, filling, dumping, and grabbing the beans. Some of the children just enjoy the sensation of running their hands through the beans.
Have fun playing and learning with your children today!

This is such a fantastic idea! You're so right about the tongs. I wonder how long the lentils and peas were sorted in neat rows like that! :)

Thanks Sharon! It lasted about 30 seconds. Talk about an invitation to play! They couldn't keep their hands out of it. :)
