5 Favorite Color Books

Books about colors for preschoolers
This week's centers included color sorting, color mixing, and color sculptures.  Here are our 5 favorite color books to add to the mix.

#1 Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle
It is impossible to talk about color books (or Bear books or Back to School Books) without mentioning Brown Bear, Brown Bear.  This is one of my Top 10 books, and it is perfect for teaching colors to young children.

#2 Rainbow Duck by Yvette Lodge
When my own kiddos were infants and toddlers, they loved touch and feel books.  This sweet Rainbow Duck book has sensory elements that are just right for our youngest students

#3 Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh
After students have learned their colors, it's time to start playing with mixing them.  I love to read this book about the 3 little white mice who mix colors and try to hide from the cat.

#4 White Rabbit's Color Book by Alan Baker
This book has a similar premise to Mouse Paint.  The white rabbit jumps in bowls of paint and changes color.  The students get so excited when he takes a dip in all three colors and turns brown.

#5 Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni
This is probably my favorite color mixing book.  When Little Blue and Little Yellow hug each other, something special happens!
Leo Lionni
After reading this story, we love to play with a little blue and little yellow play dough of our own.

  1. The Black Book of Colors, by Menena Cottin. All of the pictures are in Braille on beautiful black glossy pages. The words describe colors as sensations and smells. I read it to my class every year.
