5 Favorite Winter Books

As a fan of predictability and planning, I am declaring Fridays here at the blog "5 Fave Fridays."  This week I want to share our 5 Favorite Winter Books.

#1 All You Need for a Snowman by Alice Schertle
I love this book.  The excitement in the story builds as more and more snowflakes fall from the sky. The best part is the illustration in the middle of the book - a beautiful 2-page vertical spread.  The snowman!

#2 Snowballs by Lois Ehlert
Every one of Lois Ehlert's books is a work of art.  The illustrations combined with the simple text make this one perfect for preschoolers.

#3 The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Shirley Neitzel
Preschoolers are drawn to books with repeating text.  This story follows the pattern of "This is the House that Jack Built" and it is the perfect introduction to our lesson on winter clothing.  I always use a box of winter props and have the students take them out one at a time as we read.  Visuals + Books = 3-Year-Old Active Listeners
#4 The Mitten by Jan Brett
Like Lois Ehlert, Jan Brett creates books that are a feast for young eyes.  There are lots of variations on the story of "The Mitten" but this one is my favorite.  Nikki is a young boy who loses one of the snow white mittens that his grandmother knitted him.  One by one, animals find the mitten and make it their home.  They keep squeezing in, until a tiny mouse arrives.  The best part of this book is that the illustrations help the students make predictions about what will happen in the next page.  Making predictions is an essential reading skill!

#5 There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow! by Lucille Colandro
This one is not in the same class as Ehlert or Brett's books, but the students in my class love this series of "Old Lady" (or in this case "Cold Lady") song books.

Which are your favorite winter books?  I'm always looking for new ideas.

Enjoy playing, learning and reading with your children today!
