You might know that I'm a bit of a picture bookaholic. My collection of farm books is absolutely one of my favorites. There are so many terrific books about farms and farm animals that are perfect for preschoolers. Here's a list of 5 of our Favorites:
#1 Storm is Coming! by Heather Tecavac
The naive farm animals in this story don't understand exactly what a storm is. When the wind starts howling and the rain starts pouring, they are relieved that it is not Storm knocking on their door. We had quite a series of rain storms last week in VA, so this book was timely!
#2 Mrs. Wishy-Washy's Farm by Joy Cowley
It would be impossible to make a list of perfect farm picture books without including Mrs. Wishy-Washy. The cow, pig and duck do not want to take a bath in the old tub, so they decide to run away to the city where they get so dirty that a bath back at the farm sounds like "bliss"!
#3 Big Red Bard by Margaret Wise Brown
The author of Good Night Moon and the illustrator of If you Give a Mouse a Cookie also wrote Big Red Barn-- a beautiful rhyming book about farm animals. It's a must read.
#4 Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin
No doubt that this might be my favorite farm book ever! I had the pleasure of meeting Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin at the National Book Festival a few years ago. They are so genuine and likeable.
I love Farmer Brown. I love the obstinent cows, and I love that spunky duck! Preschoolers in 2014 have probably never used or even seen a typewriter. Before reading this book, I show them what it looks like and demonstrate how it works. Then, afterwards they can practice typing letters during center time. So much fun!
#5 Down on the Farm by Merrily Kutner
Down on the Farm is a catchy sing-song book that introduces each animal on the farm, and the sound that they make. My preschoolers love to find out from this story that a baby goat is called a "kid"!
Which are your favorite farm books? Have fun reading, playing and learning with your children today.
