If you know me well, you will know that among my many quirks is my need to put everything in rainbow order. These color sorting centers are definitely my cup of tea! Most of my preschoolers are able to identify their colors, so the goals of these centers are twofold: sorting (an essential early math skill!) and fine motor practice.
To make these Froot Loop Skewers, we stuck 6 kabob skewers (pointy side down) into a block of floral foam. Each student has a bowl of colored froot loop cereal. I buy the cereal at the dollar store, and make a point to explain to the students that they can't eat it because everyone has touched it. So far, so good! The child takes the loops and sorts them by color onto the skewers.
We have been collecting the screw lids from milk, juice, and the fruit mash pouches for a few weeks. At this center, the students use large tongs (another dollar store find!) to sort the lids into baskets by color.
This fantastic bulletin board was inspired by a
Color Sorting blog post. We covered empty paper towel rolls with colored paper and added matching plastic buckets. The students take the basket of rainbow pom-poms and drop them through the tubes into the matching buckets. This is so much more fun than just sorting them into the buckets, and it requires some fine motor control to get the poms into the tubes.
With any luck, the snow will melt this weekend and we might spot a spring rainbow in the sky!
