Symmetrical Mittens

In keeping with our winter weather and snow theme, the students painted symmetrical mittens at the art center.

To prepare we set out bowls of paint with spoons and large construction paper that had already been folded in half.  The kiddos dripped, smeared, or brushed the paint on one half of their papers.

Then they folded the paper in half and "smushed" the two sides together.

It is so exciting to peel the pages apart to reveal the symmetrical design!

We always introduce the term symmetry and have the students look for parts of their picture that are the same on the left and the right.  We also use real mittens and encourage them to notice that the left and right mittens are symmetrical.

After the pictures have dried, we fold them back up, trace a mitten shape on the back, and cut them apart.  They are each unique and beautiful:

To finish the projects off, we punch holes in them and add a ribbon.  They make a colorful bulletin board or display.

Enjoy playing and learning with your children today!
